For our first Community Spotlight interview, we spoke with Mrs. Virginia Sellon. Mrs. Sellon has lived in Randolph for many years. She has been married to Bob Sellon for almost 66 years. He runs Sellon's Machine Shop. They have 4 children and 10 grandchildren.
Mrs. Sellon is pictured here with Erin, Brayden, Justin, and Max-members of The Think Tank while they practice posing for the library's new green screen technology...notice the fish tank background and the kids ready to take a dip in the aquarium!
Mrs. Sellon told us that she worked at her first paying job when she was 11 years old. She babysat for a little boy and did that family's laundry in her spare time. She earned $0.25 an hour! Since then she has worked as an accountant at Gillette Dairy, a Para for the schools here in Randolph, and she also taught swimming lessons for 40 years! That's a long time!
Mrs. Sellon listed her parents when asked who her role models are. She likes avocados, tomatoes, and nuts, and tells us she tries to eat healthy foods. Her favorite song is Lavender Blue. She brought two of her favorite books to show us. They are Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero by Michael Hingson and The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. You can find both of these books at The Lied Randolph Public Library.
The quote Mrs. Sellon chose to share with us is by Edgar Albert Guest. She remembers having to stay after school when she was in 5th grade because she did not have this memorized as assigned.
It Couldn't Be Done
Someone Said that it couldn't be done
Someone Said that it couldn't be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried.
So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it!
The biggest change Mrs. Sellon has seen in the world involves computers-they have enabled us to travel to the moon! The changes she has seen in Randolph include the school, building of the library, and the golf course. She has also noticed lots more empty stores on main street. She says the best thing about living in Randolph is the people-it is a friendly, loving place to live.
One thing that we were surprised to find out about Mrs. Sellon is that she was once the 3rd runner-up in the Mrs. Nebraska contest! When she competed, she had to bake a cake, fry chicken, sew an apron, and give a speech.
Mrs. Sellon says she finds happiness in waking up every morning and being healthy. She enjoys spending time with friends and family and is looking forward to a trip to Arizona. She told us that she has lived her dreams. She has traveled to Alaska and Hawaii, has flown in airplanes, and has sailed on ships. Her most important advice to us is to READ, and to be respectful to our parents, teachers, and to each other.
